Innovation management and emerging operational strategies: recent trends, challenges, and applications

With the ever-increasing progress of human societies, businesses have become more specialized, dynamic, and complex. In the past, business owners (who were also generally considered system managers) could manage the system by mastering their specialized knowledge, while in today's societies, this is impossible. Carrying out operations (production or service) has become so complicated that it requires scientific, efficient, and practical strategies while involving various complementary specialties. Today, in large organizations, managers and engineers, psychologists, financial, marketing, research and development consultants, etc., come to organizations' aid and support them to maintain survival or progress. In small organizations, managers have realized that they can improve their current situation by using the consulting services of experts. In this regard, the role of applied and developmental research conducted by researchers has solved many problems for organizations. Nevertheless, the characteristics of the modern world have put numerous challenges in front of managers, which require more attention from experts.

With the globalization of systems, increasing environmental uncertainty, a more complex business environment, and a significant increase in competition, dynamic systems require operational strategies to face the above challenges. These strategies may be in the fields of decision-making, planning, financial and accounting management, human resource management, and other matters related to organizations. Due to the advancement of technology at the global level, companies and organizations felt a more important requirement to properly integrate and communicate technical and engineering skills with management and business principles. Engineering management, also known as the principles of engineering in business, seeks to analyze and investigate various real problems in the economic, managerial, and commercial fields by applying the principles and foundations of management science together with engineering knowledge.
